The Prompt Receipt
Attach the ask to the answer so reviewers can challenge the right thing.
AI can produce a clean memo in minutes. The risk is not always the writing. It is that the polished page hides the ask that shaped it. When leaders review only the output, they debate tone and structure while the real leverage sits upstream: what was requested, what was constrained, what was ruled out, and what the model was never told.
The Prompt Receipt is a short attachment that travels with every AI-shaped deliverable on a decision path. It makes the ask visible, so stewardship can land on the right surface.
Why polish is not proof
A fluent draft can make a weak brief feel settled. If nobody saved the prompt, the team argues about paragraphs while the original constraints drift or disappear.
Reviewers inherit the ask
Anyone who signs off is also signing off on the question that was asked. Without a receipt, they cannot see whether the question was fair, narrow, or loaded.
Memory is not an audit trail
Chat history is fragile. People leave, threads get renamed, and "I think we told it to ignore cost" is not a record. A one-page receipt outlives the session.
Build a Prompt Receipt in four lines
Keep it short enough that people will actually fill it in. Four lines cover most leadership work.
1. The ask
One sentence: what you asked AI to produce, for whom, and for what decision.
2. The constraints
What must be true: budget ceiling, policy, non-negotiables, tone, length, or format.
3. The sources allowed
What the model could use: named files, approved data, public sources only, or "no web."
4. What you told it to ignore
What was ruled out on purpose: competitor names, options already killed, assumptions you refused to entertain.
That is the whole receipt. Paste it above the draft, or attach it as the first comment in the doc.
How to use it in the room
- Open the receipt before the draft. If the ask is wrong, stop. Do not polish a misaimed answer.
- Challenge constraints and exclusions with the same seriousness you challenge recommendations.
- When you change the ask midstream, update the receipt. A stale receipt is worse than none.
- Store receipts with the decision record, not only in the chat tool.
The leadership question
Speed without visibility creates quiet risk. The Prompt Receipt does not slow good work. It makes the upstream choices inspectable so judgment can land where it matters.
Ask your team this week: for the last AI-shaped recommendation we approved, could anyone reconstruct the ask without opening the chat?
Try it: pick one decision memo in flight and add a four-line Prompt Receipt before the next review.
